How to clean up a flood damaged Golf Course

Posted by John Zuccerella on Tue, Apr 09, 2013 @ 10:04 AM

In an article written by Jeff Kolpack of Inforum, the Forum of Fargo and Moorhead, SRS Crisafulli makes news for helping the Fargo Park District plan for quick removal of anticipated flood waters at the Edgewood Golf Course, an 18-hole, par 71 Championship course beautifully located along the Red River - the very same Red River that is likely to jump it's banks.

“Enlisting the help of a small army… to fight a flood.  A very small three-piece army known as Crisafulli water pumps.”

describe the image

Over a year ago, the Fargo Park District made an investment in three Crisafulli trailer pumps to empty a basin of their golf course which floods when the Red River reaches the 30 foot flood stage.  Rather than waiting for the water to drain naturally, the District made the decision to purchase three Crisafulli water pumps. What they didn't expect was how effective the pumps would be. If the course can open weeks ahead of schedule, golfers can hit the course sooner,  enabling the District to realize a sooner than expected return on investment.

Overcoming Challenges in the International Dredge Market

Posted by John Zuccerella on Wed, Jan 30, 2013 @ 09:01 AM

SRS Crisafulli, Inc. ships a shallow draft dredge to Manila, Philippines to ring in 2013

CIMG1511comp

After a year of close collaboration with the customer, SRS Crisafulli’s versatile resources in both engineering and manufacturing resulted in shipment of a Rotomite SD-110 shallow draft dredge to Maynilad Water Service in the Philippines.

Three Philippine firms played key roles to close the deal – i.e., Maynilad Water Services, a private water and wastewater provider for the 17 cities and municipalities that comprise the West Zone of the greater Metro Manila area, WaterKonsult Equipment and Service, Inc., a leading equipment and service supplier serving Maynilad and many other Philippine water utilities and water districts, and SRS Crisafulli’s authorized Factory Representative, Ramoncito “Chito” Manaois, of RFM Machinery & Equipment Corp. of Manila, Philippines.

In February of 2012, Waterkonsult contacted SRS Crisafulli through SRS Crisafulli’s website.

Maynilad Water Service needed to remove sediment at its La Mesa Treatment Plant 1.  The sediment-bearing water comes from the Angat Dam and travels more than 30 kilometers to the plant. The river also carries silt to the treatment plant where sludge is collected at the bottom of sedimentation basins. To achieve acceptable, sustained settled water quality and to comply with environmental regulations, La Mesa Treatment Plant 1 must clean its sedimentation basins twice a year.  Cleaning the basins twice a year will preserve basin capacity and water quality.

Waterkonsult learned of Maynilad’s bid offering and contacted SRS Crisafulli. Waterkonsult, in association with Crisafulli’s Philippine sales representative, asked SRS Crisafulli for detailed product specifications for the Rotomite SD-110 dredge, and what makes the Rotomite SD-110 a superior dredge.

Over the next several months, personnel from Crisafulli, Ramoncito, and Waterkonsult collaborated with Maynilad, answering requests for more information on the Rotomite SD-110. After satisfactorily answering all the requests, the Rotomite SD-110 dredge was selected. The winning SD-110 package offers a high-performing dredge pump able to move 1500 gpm at 80ft TDH in water.  The cutterhead has a 90-inch by 15-inch opening for high sludge production. The hydraulic thruster enables the dredge to be driven like a boat.

On December 31, 2012, the Rotomite SD-110 left SRS Crisafulli’s Factory headed for Manilia for delivery in February 2013. Pursuant to SRS Crisafulli’s superior worldwide service, a SRS Crisafulli Factory-trained engineer will travel to Manila to support the installation and to commission the Rotomite SD-110 dredge.

Stay tuned…

SRS Crisafulli Congratulates Miss Montana 2012 Contestants

Posted by Elizabeth Kaiser on Wed, Jun 20, 2012 @ 12:06 PM

SRS Crisafulli is a fan of the Miss Montana Scholarship Program.  Glendive Montana is the home of the SRS Crisafulli factory as well as the Miss Montana and Miss Montana's Outstanding Teen Scholarship Programs.  The Town of Glendive hosts a parade followed by three nights of competition ending with the crowning ceremony.

Wikipedia hosts some interesting and entertaining historical Miss Montana facts.  The first competition took place in 1939.  Ten years later, in 1949, after Miss Montana Carol Fraser's
"horse nearly fell into the orchestra pit, the use of live animals was banned from Miss America talent presentations."  In 1970, Miss Montana Jane Opp "took over title after original winner Kathy Huppe resigned due to pageant officials asking her to stop speaking out against the Vietnam War."

Today MissMontana.com describes the program as "the Miss Montana Scholarship Program exists to provide personal and professional opportunities to young women to promote their voices in culture, politics, and the community."

Meet this year's Miss Montana and Miss Montana's Oustanding Teen winners:

SRS Crisafulli Takes Notice of New Technology in Floating Wetlands

Posted by Elizabeth Kaiser on Wed, Jun 13, 2012 @ 13:06 PM

By Elizabeth Kaiser, SRS Crisafulli Marketing Manager

SRS Crisafulli spotlights an article from the magazine WaterWorld titled "Floating Wetlands Help Boost Nitrogen Removal in Lagoons" by Mark A. Reinsel, Ph.D.  Dr. Reinsel is a Professional Engineer who focuses on treating mining and other industrial wastewaters through biological, chemical and physical processes.

The article introduces us to research on floating treatment wetlands (FTW) and discusses FTW's ability to reduce nutrient levels in lagoons, including small municipal systems with average flows between 12 - 16 gallons per minute.

These studies review and compare the effectiveness of applications in wastewater treatment lagoons, raw wastewater, ponds and lakes, and agricultural runoff into waterways.  The earliest study conducted was for a Montana Board of Research and Commercialization Technology (MBRCT) grant.  The Rehberg Ranch, a planned community near Billings Montana, is one of the sites for this FTW study.

Midwest Floating Island, LLC has published case studies summarizing FTW technology. Case studies include the Rehberg Ranch lagoon, McLean's Pit Landfill in New Zealand and an alternative nesting habitat in California.

The Midwest Floating Island FTWs are constructed of post-consumer polymer fibers, vegetated with native plants.  FTWs mimic the ability of natural wetlands to clean water by bringing a "concentrated wetland effect" to any water body - in this case, an aerated wastewater lagoon.

Direct to Montana

Posted by Elizabeth Kaiser on Thu, Apr 26, 2012 @ 13:04 PM

By Laura M. Fleming, SRS Crisafulli CFO and President

Our friend, Governor Schweitzer, is in New York City this week promoting Montana tourism:  “go to Montana to see how it was.”

His friend, David Letterman, hosted him on the Late Show last night.

Of great interest to me was Governor Schweitzer’s announcement of the direct from New York to somewhere in Montana flight, which I had heard rumored.  I am a frequent commuter from our home near New York City to SRS Crisafulli’s manufacturing plant in Eastern Montana.  The idea of a direct flight is appealing.

So, the answer is...

Starting on June 9, and running on Saturdays through September 1, for $600 on United Airlines, you can catch a flight from Newark, New Jersey (airport code EWR) at 8:30 in the morning Eastern Time, and be in Bozeman, Montana (airport code BZN) at 10:15 am Mountain Time, a four hour forty-two minutes elapsed time direct flight.  The following Saturday, if you get to the Bozeman airport by noon, you will be back in Newark by 6:00, a four hour elapsed time flight, with good tail winds.

Bozeman Airport

So why Bozeman?  You’ve landed west of Billings, south of Helena, and 90 minutes to the north gate of the Yellowstone National Park.  Bozeman is the 4th largest city in the state - population 37,000.

The city was founded in 1883. Bozeman is a college town at 4,820 feet, in the Bridger Mountains, the Tobacco Root Mountains, and the Big Belt Mountains, east of the Continental divide.

Bozeman is a great launching place for a summer holiday, and only five and a half hours west of our town, Glendive, by road.

Well done, Governor!

What is "Fishing?" SRS Crisafulli Studies Oil and Gas

Posted by Elizabeth Kaiser on Wed, Apr 18, 2012 @ 08:04 AM

By Elizabeth Kaiser, SRS Crisafulli Marketing Manager

Residents of Eastern Montana and Western North Dakota are fortunate to have access to many natural resources.

Paddlefishing Montana
Paddlefishing on the Yellowstone River with SRS Crisafulli employees

Outdoor recreation is a popular past time here, with fishing at the top of the list.   Ask many residents here what kind of fish have they caught or what tool(s) they used to catch their trophy and their answers will become enthusiastic tales of "Well, there was that time when..."

There is another natural resource here that is quickly forming the base of a booming industry - oil, and if you pose the same fishing questions to members of that industry you will receive completely different answers.  'Fishing' in the oil and gas industry is a necessary activity, requiring specialized fishing tools and trained tool operators.

What does 'fishing' mean in the oil and gas industry?  The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) defines fishing as:  the procedure of recovering lost or stuck equipment in the wellbore.  Lost or stuck equipment can be anything from a piece of scrap metal to a part of the drill stem, and must be recovered before work can proceed.

Because the type of 'fish' varies so much likewise the fishing-tool varies greatly as well.  For example cutters (tools used to separate portions of the 'fish') might be knives, chemicals or explosives.  The many types of fishing tools also include:

FLUMP Field Installation Helped by Novel Means of Communication

Posted by Elizabeth Kaiser on Tue, Apr 03, 2012 @ 12:04 PM

By Elizabeth Kaiser, SRS Crisafulli Marketing Manager

Sometimes we need to look up a phone number, check an account, or find an engineer ASAP for on-the-go technical information.  Most of us today rely heavily on our cell phones and email for these important communication needs.  On rare occasions, however, we may find ourselves with no cell coverage, no access to email, and no time to wait for a text or email response.  Maybe not often, but you have to admit, it does happen.

Recently SRS Crisafulli Specialists Chad Schipman and Tristan Hoff were dispatched to install a Crisafulli FLUMP in a remote area of Mexico.  Unfortunately, however, upon arriving at the final destination airport in Mexico, Mr. Schipman discovered his baggage had been lost.  The missing baggage contained the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) manual documenting all the technical specifications for the FLUMP they were about to install and for which they were scheduled to provide training.

Thanks to years of experience, the installation was successfully completed without the manual, but they still needed the technical specs.  Mr. Schipman realized he had no cell phone service and access to his remote email was blocked.  However, he did have Internet access.  On the final morning of the installation visit the home factory received a live chat request (a feature recently made available on the crisafullipumps.com website) from our very own Mr. Schipman.

Chat live now

Within a half hour we were able to publish the required O&M pages and pump curve papers via the crisafullipumps.com website for fast and easy download.  Later that day another chat request came in from Mr. Schipman.  Working together the Engineering, Sales and Marketing departments were collectively able to assist Mr. Schipman. They provided him with flow calculations, general advice and the other documents Mr. Schipman required.  "The live chat was a 'life saver,'" said Mr. Schipman upon his return home.

Ever find yourself in a similar situation?  Perhaps we can assist with our live chat function found at crisafullipumps.com.  It is available 8-5 MST Monday through Friday.  During off hours you can use the live chat to leave us a message and we will respond ASAP.

One Thing Leads to Another, by SRS Crisafulli's Laura Fleming

Posted by Elizabeth Kaiser on Wed, Mar 28, 2012 @ 08:03 AM

By Laura M. Fleming, SRS Crisafulli CFO and President

The Billings Gazette article by Jan Falstad about SRS Crisafulli, Inc. “Pumping Up Profits” ran last Sunday.  Promptly, I received an email from Russ Fletcher of MATR – Montana Associated Technology Roundtables.  By end of day, after a series a questions, Russ invited me to attend the Montana Ambassadors program in Billings at end of week.

Montana Ambassadors

The Montana Ambassadors program was delightful.  Fun.  Real.  They honored an Educator, an Entreprenuer, and a Business:  MSU President Waded Cruzado, Sarah Calhoun of Red Ants Pants, and Stillwater Mining’s Frank McAllister.  Waded spoke about the constructive impact of the Land Grant University legislatation - the Morrill Acts of 1862 and 1890;  Sarah told very funny stories about her product development and launch;  and Frank handed out palladium jewelry to all the ladies in the room.

Harolg G. Hamm

Harold G Hamm,
Chairman and CEO
Continental Resources

We were also asked to Imagine the Possible by Governor Brian Schweitzer and Keynote Speaker Harold Hamm, founder of the Domestic Energy Producers Alliance, and CEO of Continental Resources, the largest leaseholder and driller in the Bakken Shale – which sits northeast of our rural community of Glendive.  Governor Schweitzer remarked that as governor, he has attended 30 funerals of Montana service men and women lost in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars.   Domestic energy production will enable us to conserve and protect our treasures.  Governor Schweitzer also called out, “its engineers that will change the world.”

As part of the Ambassadors program, there was an energy panel, which included Scott Farris of TransCanada.  I was able to ask Scott a question regarding the proposed Baker onramp and the Bakken Oilfield production, which is currently going to market by road and rail.  The Keystone pipeline will have a total capacity of 850,000 barrels/day.  The onramp in Baker – which is 72 miles south of Glendive - will support 100,000 barrels/day from the Bakken fields, delivering the product at half the cost of rail.  Further, the Keystone Pipeline will sequester the Bakken production in batches, a detail which I was curious about.

Energy efficiency, getting resources to the right places at the lowest cost, optimizing flows, as pump people, these are the kinds of issues we at SRS Crisafulli think about.

SRS Crisafulli's Guest Author Dr. Losoncy on Water

Posted by Elizabeth Kaiser on Wed, Mar 14, 2012 @ 07:03 AM

Article submitted by Dr. Larry Losoncy, CEO of Clean Up America

Water, Water Everywhere But Not a Drop to Drink

Two great crises face the world: shortages of energy and water. The world's population is heading towards seven billion.  It is expected to continue increasing to nearly nine billion people. In order to sustain and enhance life for this many people, it is absolutely necessary that industrialization expand around the world.  As industrialization expands, the need for energy also expands, as does the need for safe fresh water.  Ironic that a planet with many times more surface water than land mass should now be desperate for usable water!

Great Lakes
Photo Credit:  The Great Lakes; Visible Earth:  A catalog of NASA images and animations of our home planet

One fifth of the world's surface freshwater lies in the Great Lakes. That says much about how the rest of the world lacks for lakes.  Almost all of the streams and rivers on earth are now compromised, needing more and more treatment to be safe (an example of how energy and water use are linked).  Drought, flooding from climate change, pollution from wastewater, and overuse are also wrecking havoc with most rivers, both here and abroad.

Wells are increasingly threatened by groundwater pollution, unless they are deep aquifers - too far below the surface to be contaminated.  Unfortunately, however, Deep aquifers cannot replenish - precisely because they are so deep.  When pumped for irrigation, drinking water and industrial uses, they are depleted.

New technologies and strategies that go beyond conservation are needed for energy production.  Likewise, the response to water needs must go beyond conservation. New technologies for treating seawater, better use of irrigation, alternatives to water use in producing and packaging food and in the production of energy and in industrial processes are needed RIGHT NOW.

Our nation and world would do well to work together at these challenges.
